The Weight Loss Benefit of Green Tea

Research has been conducted over the last few years to identify what compound present in green tea makes it a potent health drink. The scientists have found that green tea contains several antioxidants which are responsible for many of green tea’s health benefits, including weight loss benefit. A research study by American and Swiss scientists on the weight loss benefit of green tea was concluded and the results of which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Urology. During the course of their study, they have found that green tea contains certain compounds that contribute to its weight loss benefit. Lead researcher, D. Abdul Dulloo said in a press release that there are only two ways to achieve weight loss – either reduce energy intake or increase energy expenditure. Green tea, it seems, has compounds that can increase the body’s normal metabolism rate, thus giving it its weight loss benefit. At the University of Geneva, where the study was conducted, Dr. Dulloo and his colleagues experimented on ten healthy young men. They theorized that the main contributor to green tea’s weight loss benefit is its caffeine content. To test this hypothesis on green tea’s weight loss benefit, they placed the study’s participants on a typical “Western” diet which is about forty percent fat, thirteen percent protein, and forty-seven percent carbohydrates. Thrice everyday, the researchers measured their subjects’ energy expenditure (the measurement used in determining the number of calories burned in 24 hours) and monitored their respiration quotient to find out how well they utilized their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. When they interpreted the data they collected, they found out that the men receiving regular dosages of green tea extract showed a significant increase in their 24-hour energy expenditure and a reduction in their respiration quotient (which means that more fat is burned, thereby achieving maximum weight loss). On the other hand, those men who were only given caffeine or placebo with every meal showed only minimal increases in their metabolism rates. The scientists construed that the substance catechin polyphenol present in green tea adds to its weight loss benefit. These substances in green tea may alter how the body uses the hormone norepinephrine which is responsible for increasing the metabolism rate, thus leading to weight loss. In their conclusion, the scientists inferred that green tea owes its weight loss benefit to the presence of antioxidants and the substance catechin polyphenol. These substances help increase fat and calorie burning and optimize weight loss.

Green Tea And Weight Loss Synonymous

More often, you would see green tea or green tea extracts piled together with other weight loss supplements in the market. The question is, is green tea really effective when it comes to a person’s goal to get rid of excess fats and lose some pounds on the weighing scale? Before even thinking of sipping the famous Japanese brew, take a look at the reasons why you should and why you shouldn’t consider the green tea and weight loss combo. There has been a lot of fuss about the benefits of green tea to people who are trying to lose weight. Medical research showed a lot of advantages of the tea and its components. However, like any other weight loss products, it has its own adverse effects on an individual’s general health. Let’s start weighing the facts by first looking at the good side of the said weight loss supplement and then the hazards at the latter end. Benefits of Green Tea on Metabolism A powerful antioxidant called catechin polyphenols found in green tea is known to be responsible for many of the benefits of the tea. The antioxidant can stimulate the body’s process of burning fuel and releasing calories as heat. Research showed that green tea increases energy expenditure or metabolism boost. At a 24 hour period, it is recorded that metabolic rate is increased to up to 4%. In short, green tea revs up your metabolism and thus decreases your chances of gaining more weight. Benefits of Green Tea on Reducing Appetite If you blame your appetite on your unending or uncontrolled craving for food, then green tea and weight loss may just be what you need. Green tea is known as an appetite suppressant because of its blood sugar regulating capabilities. According to studies, green tea’s polyphenols have the ability to depress Leptin, a protein that plays a major rule in increasing appetite. Benefits of Green Tea on Fat Absorption Green tea has three major components which can promote fat loss. These components are catechins, caffeine, and theanine which can inhibit gastric and pancreatic lipase, enzymes that digest and stores fat in a form that is healthy for the body. Drinking green tea after a meal can slow the rise of blood sugar and thus prevents fat storage in the body. Benefits of Green Tea on Calorie Count Start counting calories on your morning brew and guess what you will find. Double cream, double sugar, mocha, frappucinno, etc are causing havoc on your waistline. If you are addicted to a dose of caffeine in the morning but want those calories off your diet, then green tea and weight loss brew is right for you. Health Hazards of Green tea The hazard of the intake of green tea lies on its caffeine. Caffeine is harmful especially for people who have heart problems and high blood pressure. But as they say, to every problem there is a solution. Green tea and weight loss can still be an option for people who have health concerns when it comes to taking in caffeine. Decaffeinated green tea, usually that which comes in an extract form, is available in the market too.

How Does Green Tea Help Weight Loss

For many people, finding a weight loss supplement that’s safe and effective would be nothing short of a miracle. We all know that there are no magic bullets when it comes to weight loss; we have to consume fewer calories in a day than our body uses in order to lose weight. However, finding ways to burn fat faster would speed up the process and make it easier. One product that seems to have much promise in helping people to lose weight is green tea. In some studies, green tea has been shown to help regulate insulin and lower cholesterol and triglycerides. In addition, it is believed that green tea speeds up the metabolism, so that we burn fat faster, and can even turn off the receptors that make us want to eat. In addition, green tea, unlike many other weight loss aids is very healthy overall. Green tea is a potent source of anti-oxidants, which help us stay healthy and disease free by fighting free radicals. Free radicals are oxygen containing molecules that are a by-product of our digestive processes. Left unchecked, they damage our cells and DNA, eventually leading to disease. However, green tea and other foods with anti-oxidants keep free radicals at bay, preventing aging and disease. For example, diets rich in green tea and other anti-oxidants have been linked to a reduction in the risk of heart disease and cancer. So, green tea is a weight loss supplement that you can feel good about, because it can improve your overall health while it helps you shed the pounds. Most of us are aware of the problems that many other weight loss supplements can cause. Ephedra, for example, has proven to be an effective way to speed up the metabolism, but can have very dangerous side effects. In fact, it has even been linked to heart attacks and death in some users. But, just how does green tea work? There are several components in green tea that seem to work together to provide the health and weight loss benefits that green tea’s so famous for. Researchers have pinpointed three components in green tea that seem to have an effect on weight loss. Caffeine Green tea has lower caffeine content than coffee or black tea, but it does contain caffeine. Interestingly enough, however, green tea’s caffeine does not seem to have the negative side effects found in other products containing caffeine. Green tea doesn’t cause jitters or speed up the heart rate the way that other caffeinated beverages can. However, the caffeine in green tea does appear to speed up the metabolism. Many of us take our caffeine intake for granted, but caffeine has been shown to aid in weight loss. Many studies have shown that people on a low calorie diet who consume caffeine daily lose more weight overall than those who are on a low calorie diet alone. Catechins Catechins are the anti-oxidants in green tea. Catechins are polyphenolic antioxidant plant metabolites, specifically flavonoids called flavan-3-ols. They are found in many plants, including the cocoa plant and the coffee plant, but the best source of catechins is the Camellia sinensis (tea) plant. The reason that green tea is considered a better source of catechins than black tea is because of the difference in processing. Black tea is fermented, which changes the catechins. Green tea, however, is unfermented, leaving the catechins in their natural state. Because tea catechins are some of the most powerful anti-oxidants around, they are some of the most effective at preventing disease. This is why diets rich in tea are thought to prevent many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. In terms of weight loss, catechins are believed to suppress lipid (fat) absorption from the diet. This is important because it helps reduce cholesterol, but it is also thought to prevent the accumulation of body fat. Theanine Theanine is the main amino acid in green tea. Theanine may be important to weight loss because of its ability to induce relaxation and the release of dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical produced by the brain that helps in providing a feeling of well being in the body. Theanine also seems to minimize the effects of caffeine, which is why the caffeine in green tea doesn’t seem to cause jitters and an increased heart rate the way that caffeine in other beverages can. So, while theanine may not actively cause weight loss, it can be effective in creating a feeling of calm in those who ingest it. This power may help those who overeat as a result of stress to curb this tendency. It is certain that more studies are needed on how green tea helps with weight loss. One interesting study on the subject, by the Shizuoka University in Japan, evaluated all three of these green tea components individually, as well as in combination, to try and determine just what components are most important. This study concluded that the most important component of green tea for weight loss is caffeine. Caffeine is responsible for speeding up the metabolism and creating thermogenesis, which burns fat. However, the study also showed that catechins do seem to have an anti-obesity effect on their own, helping the body to eliminate dietary fat rather than absorbing it. In short, green tea seems to be the near perfect combination for helping lose weight and improve health at the same time. Diet and exercise are still critical to taking off excess weight and keeping it off for good, but it does appear that green tea can be an effective tool in fighting the battle of the bulge.

The Link Between Green Tea And Losing Weight

Going back thousands of years, green tea has been enjoyed in both Japan and China, both as a wonderful tea to drink and for all its herbal healing properties. In recent times, green tea has also caught on in the West for the same reasons. Many scientific studies have been done to determine whether its therapeutic use is justified, and to learn just why green tea is so effective. Much has been learned, and one of the most exciting discoveries has been the link between green tea and losing weight. Why is Green Tea and Losing Weight So Effective? Green tea has been proven to have several connections in the area of weight loss. It helps to speed up up the metabolism causing the body to use up more calories, it helps to keep the body from storing calories as fat, and can help suppress the appetite. Green tea and losing weight is also made easier by the fact that green tea is naturally calorie-free itself. Burn More Calories, Lose More Fat Research done in Switzerland in the 1990s showed that overweight subjects taking a green tea supplement while eating a normal diet became able to burn more calories than those who were not taking the green tea pill. Green tea works to accomplish this by increasing the rate of metabolism in the body, which is called thermogenesis. As well, when using green tea and losing weight, one tends to lose more fat than you would if you were not drinking green tea. This leads to a much healthier body in the end. Eat Less! The most obvious thing you need to do when using green tea and losing weight is to eat less food, like with any diet plan. Unlike most other plans, green tea will help you with this, as it acts as a natural control on your appetite, telling your brain that you are full after you have eaten food instead of leaving you wanting to overeat. Replace Other Drinks with Green Tea and Lose Weight Faster An obvious benefit of this plan is that you can just replace the drinks you normally drink with green tea and losing weight will be easy! The average coffee shop drink contains many more calories and gram of fat than you should be drinking just to get the benefit of the caffeine in it. Green tea also contains caffeine, although not in as large a quantity as coffee – this is another reason that makes green tea healthier. But it does contain enough to give you a little boost of energy to get you through your morning meetings. Unsweetened, green tea has no caffeine, and like all teas does not contain fat.

Weight Loss With the Help of Green Tea

Weight Loss – Green Tea Benefit Over the past few years, green tea and its connection with weight loss has long been the center of various clinical studies. Positive effects of green tea on weight loss have been discovered in recent years. Studies show that the relation between green tea and weight loss are substantially linked together through the plant’s thermogenic properties. Thermogenesis is the process by which the body produces heat by speeding up metabolism, burning calories, and breaking down fat. Certain substances in green tea are believed to help in the body’s thermogenesis, thus contributing to weight loss. Weight Loss in Other Herbs Other than green tea, there are other natural herbs that contribute to weight loss. Gugulipid for instance has been shown to augment the metabolic rate of the body and help with thermogenesis, thus leading to weight loss. Gugulipid has also been reported as a catalyst for lowering down cholesterol levels. Another herb that aids in weight loss is Maitaki. Derived from a Japanese plant, Maitaki helps promote weight loss by targeting the liver, which is a major digestive part of the body. Maximizing Weight Loss Benefits in Green Tea A standardized weight loss herbal extract of pure green tea is needed in order to maximize the weight loss benefits of green tea. The market offers several green tea weight loss products that do not use standardized extract. These non-standardized green tea weight loss products are cheaper but do not contain enough active green tea substances to have any significant weight loss benefits. Scientists and traditional herbalists believe that better weight loss results are achieved when green tea is used in conjunction with other weight loss herbs and with other nutrients. So before buying a green tea weight loss product, it is advisable that you choose a product that contains a rich blend of green tea herbs, minerals and nutrient that aid in weight loss. Green tea when combined with ginger and olive leaf helps lower cholesterol and promotes weight loss. Green tea helps stop blood vessel constriction while CoQ 10 protects the heart and ensure blood pressure levels. By mixing green tea with CoQ 10, you will not only achieve maximum weight loss but you will also be able maintain the health of several body systems at one time. The Ideal Green Tea Weight Loss Product The first thing to make sure of when buying green tea products is to see if the manufacturer of the green tea extract follows strict GMP compliance, the manufacturing standard used throughout the world. Having GMP approval in green tea products assures you that you are getting a product of the highest quality. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, herbal products such as green tea are considered dietary supplements. This means that the success or effectiveness of these products do not have any guarantees. Companies or manufacturers that claim 100% success in their green tea products are doing false advertising and should not be patronized. For assurance that you’re getting your money’s worth when you buy a green tea product, find a product that is using standardized green tea extract. Look for strict GMP compliance and make sure that the manufacturer of the green tea product has all the proper credentials in product formulation.

Green Tea – A Healthy Alternative To Caffeine

Caffeine is found occurring naturally and used as an additive to several of the foods we consume throughout the day, including coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and chocolate amongst other products. We often rely on such caffeine- laden products to give us boosts of energy when we are flagging. Many of us struggle to function and get through the day without it. Caffeine is very difficult to avoid completely as mentioned previously, it does naturally occur in many foods and drinks but when consumed to excess, do you ever stop and wonder whether all that caffeine might be detrimental to your health? Medical research has recognised that very excessive caffeine consumption, or even moderate caffeine intake in children and some individuals who are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine, may cause caffeine intoxication. Caffeine intoxication symptoms consist of; restlessness, sleep disturbances irritability, nervousness, frequent urination and stomach upsets. And trying to go cold turkey can cause headaches, anxiety and even the shakes. Studies also suggest that pregnant women, those suffering from high blood pressure, anyone with heart disease, those who have survived a stroke and the elderly should drink caffeine with extreme caution. People who suffer from anxiety disorders or who are caffeine sensitive are much more prone to side-effects. Of course, there are healthier alternatives to getting that much needed energy boost. Green tea has been used for its medicinal properties for centuries to treat practically everything from headaches to depression. The ancient Chinese herb contains catechin polyphenols like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which are antioxidants that can protect the liver from toxins and aid in its normal function. These antioxidants mop up the harmful free radicals in the body and can help protect against heart ailments, strokes, arthritis, diabetes and degenerative diseases of the nervous system. Theanine, another ingredient in Green tea has a calming effect on the human body, and is known to relieve anxiety and partially neutralize the rise in blood pressure that can occur due to caffeine intake. It is also used to treat an array of skin conditions including acne and eczema. Green tea does contain Caffeine as with any regular tea, however the amount is so inconsequential that it is unlikely to cause any major side effects and with the vast amount of benefits demonstrated by drinking a daily cuppa of Green tea we really can’t think of any better reason to kick the habit and instead, make Green tea your drink of choice.
